LEED: Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design

  • Definition: LEED is an internationally recognized green building certification system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). LEED-certified buildings are designed to meet environmental goals including reducing landfill waste and greenhouse gas emissions, conserving energy and water and lowering operating costs. Based on the number of points achieved, a building/project can achieve one of four LEED rating levels: Certified, Silver, Gold or Platinum.
  • Example: Choice Hotel’s home office in Rockville, MD is Platinum LEED certified.
